A Special Announcement for BasedGamer

As most of you know, I have been working on (BasedGamer) with my team. It’s been a month now since announcing BasedGamer, and it’s been a whirlwind of ups and downs! I’m thankful for all of it. The extreme put-downs I have faced have been challenging, but it has also given me strength and motivation to succeed. I am even more passionate now to make BasedGamer a reality.

I understand a lot of you have concerns regarding the integrity of the project and I want to ensure you that we have been taking note of the criticism that has been circulating online. I want to take this opportunity to ensure all of you that the team and I will be working hard to create a website that gamers truly deserve. We have done everything that has been requested, from a Reddit AMA to fully creating a document outlining the costs to build BasedGamer. We want to let everyone know that we are being transparent with everything.

The biggest criticism we have noticed is why we are asking for so much money on Indiegogo. I want to be clear that this is an honest amount. We have contacted many industry experts and they agree with our cost breakdown. If I asked for less money on Indiegogo, I know I could have avoided all of the criticism. However, I would not have been able to fulfill my promise of delivering a top-tier website. I personally feel that this would have been wrong for the community.

I would like to point out some things about BasedGamer because I know some people are not aware of them:

  • Our press kit and logo and graphics can be found in our Press and Media Kit here:
  • The Indiegogo campaign is fixed, meaning that the money will only be received if it reaches its goal.
  • The team and I will keep pushing forward with BasedGamer regardless of the success or failure of our Indiegogo campaign. We have received so much positive support for our efforts. We don’t want to let our beloved followers down.
  • Our designs, quotes, and other miscellaneous artworks have been created for free by the BasedGamer team.
  • I want to clarify that BasedGamer is going to be a top-tier commercial grade website that all gamers would be proud to call their own. This is very important to me.

I have decided to extend BasedGamer’s Indiegogo campaign to an additional 15 days. The link is here: It worries me that there is still 30k left to go in this campaign. This is why I am beginning to look to more social networks for help.

I am making sure BasedGamer is a success. Not for me, but for all of us. My vision for BasedGamer has always been to support its community and to give back by providing honesty and strength to my fellow gamers. It is important that all of you know how dedicated my team and I are to building something that we can all be proud of. Combined, we have already endured 1000+ hours of sleepless nights for the development of BasedGamer. We are working very hard. We want your voice heard in the industry. We want to make sure that happens.

I ask those that believe in BasedGamer, for your sincere help right now. If all my Twitter followers donated just $5 to this campaign, it would be over within a day.

Every Game is its own Masterpiece

Video Games CollectionIt has always been easier to go with the norm, to follow trends, and to subjugate yourself with rebellious fads (console wars, anyone?). Marketers know this and take advantage of their subjects.

My social media news feeds are currently being taken over by the Destiny Beta release. I’ve played the Apha release (although, I’d say it was too polished to be called one) and it was wonderful. I have to be honest though: I would not have been so excited if it weren’t for the surrounding hype around the game.

It’s clear that AAA games have the most power in the industry. However, with so many video game giants releasing a game every year, these video games are earning much less credit than before and are quickly forgotten. Destiny, too, is’ destined’ to meet this fate.

In the past, I would play the same games repeatedly because I loved them so much. Now, however, I get the occasional, “Why are you still playing that game?” This isn’t disheartening for me, but it makes me ponder about a greater issue in the gaming industry.

Every game has been worked on excessively. Developers have worked long hours day and night on a game. Publishers and marketers have spent large amounts of work and research to create the best experience for the gamer. Retailers and distributors have also created close relationships with game companies for their products.

It’s easy to forget the beauty of a game when we’re constantly exposed to newer, “better” games to play instead. Before we’re able to digest the essence of a game and fully immerse ourselves with side missions and trophy hunting, we become marketing subjects to the latest big-budget phenomenon for the PS4 or the Xbox One. As a collective consumer norm, we accept the redundancy of annual games and their large marketing ploys.

The work and effort it takes to make a game is amazing and should be valued. Every video game is its own masterpiece. At least, I see it this way.

Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty and its Competition

Infinity Ward, the ambitious group that developed Call of Duty, was once a simple start-up  that grew to unbelievable proportions. Understanding Call of Duty’s history and challenges can help enlighten those who look down upon the series.


When development company Infinity Ward was founded in 2002, most of the team had already worked on Medal of Honor – a game franchise that was soon to become their biggest competition (Fahs, 2009).During this time, Medal of Honor had already become popular, and was promised to become an annual game for its fans. The video game industry found a new niche when Medal of Honor’s popularity arose. Soon, many game developers wanted to create history-themed first-person-shooter (FPS) games as well. Infinity Ward was one of them.

The first three installments of the Call of Duty franchise dramatically grew a fan-base over its competitor, Medal of Honor. When Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released, many fans were not happy because the franchise was no longer referring to historical wars in the game. However, because of this transition, Call of Duty received many more fans due to its unique setting. Moreover, new game features such as online teamwork dynamics and ranking systems increased the hype of the game. Ultimately, the fun, interactive features of the franchise overtook its rival Medal of Honor.

Call of Duty had sold enough copies to be at the ranks of other popular video game franchises such as Mario and Grand Theft Auto (Fahs, 2009).The media drew attention to the game as well and created many controversies regarding the influence of violence in video games. Call of Duty was heavily affected by this controversy.

Standing Out From The Rest

Although Call of Duty and Medal of Honor were initially comparable to one another, the Call of Duty franchise has branched out to modern settings. Now, Call of Duty games include dystopian settings, and futuristic wars within their franchise. Richard Bailey, Editor-In-Chief of, claims that the franchise is significantly different than the other two as well. He states,

Console Wars, The PC Master Race and More

Consoles as Friends

For the longest time, a sub-group of PC gamers, labelled “The PC Master Race,” has skewed the presence of PC gamers as a pretentious and notorious gaming niche.

“The Glorious PC Gaming Master Race is a facetiouPC Master Race Gifs label used to attribute superiority to those who prefer to play video games on a personal computer (PC). Conversely, those who prefer to play games on a console are sarcastically referred to as ‘dirty console peasants.’” (RandomMan, 2013)


“The PC Master Race,” is a radical group that is unfortunately representing all PC gamers. When a gamer adapts to a specific typing of gaming system, they are inclined to feel strongly about it. However, more often than not, gamers are open to other types of gaming systems as well.

Console Wars

I admit, when the PS3 and the Xbox 360 released, I was mocking and judgemental towards non-PS3 gamers. This was mostly due to social influences, when ‘console wars’ erupted as a new-found fad among gamers in the media. This negative stigma in the gaming community is slowly ending now though. When the new PS4 and Xbox One released, friendly conversations between Microsoft and Sony executives were made public:
